Two heartening reports for week 7 in Minnesota, and for the DN NA Regatta Committee,

RumRunr reports by email at Pepin WI... " didn't get out on the ice but it looked pretty good at Pepin. We were about 90% clear on Sunday with a 1/2" of water on the ice. Had a couple of boats set up but no wind. I would expect that Lake City should be the same or better conditions.
Yesterday's snow missed the lake and all we had was a light mist last evening.
Few of the club members are setting up at Pepin tomorrow. Should be good sailing."

DN US 5366 is standing on the ice at Lake City, MN at this moment. He reports; "Yea, we could have a lot of fun here! 8-12 inches of 50% black ice and 50% dark snow ice, there are no drifts, there is no snow on the ice... it's a little rumbly but you can clearly get a DN fully wound up here!
He reports he's taken photos and will be posting later today.

We need somebody to play hookey and go sail Pepin today, any volunteers?
-- US 5369 reports he's packing up right now!

On-ice report, Lake Pepin looking good!
2 PM Friday, Icemaker reports the following:
"5369 AND 4695 HAVE SAILED. ICE IS RUMBLY, FAST, WITH NO CONTROL ISSUES OR HAZARDS OBSERVED. DEFINITELY CAN HOLD REGATTA AT LAKE CITY!"
Lake Pepin, with a 360 degree view
Friday, Jan 11, 10am.
I just drove the entire perimeter of Lake Pepin.
South of Lake City, MN looks very good.
Thickness: 8-12"
Type: 50% black, 50% hard dark grey snow-ice. There is some hard light grey snow-ice in near shore. Some loose shelf ice exists in a few spots and at most 1/4 inch with hard ice underneath.
Snow cover: 0%
Bump height: 1/2 inch, estimated.
Holes: none I could see
The sheet appears to extend across the lake - I could not see any cracks or open water from my vantage point 200 meters out. I drove south for 4 miles and could not find any cracks, just one small fissures that was fused-up.
4695 and Mike will sail Lake City Friday afternoon and report to the Western Region chairman.
In addition, there will be others sailing at the Pickle Factory in Pepin, WI. There the ice is more grey. No snow on the surface. There looks to be a huge sheet south of the factory. There is a large crack close in, but south of that looks good, just not as black as Lake City.
Here is how Lake City looks as of 9am:

I'd have no concern boating on this ice in a breeze. A bit rumbly at worst.
There is hope yet!

On way to Pepin
I talked Kiefer into riding with to sail Pepin. Should have a report back to Hotline or web by 1:30PM or so. Sounds like a good option for NA's according to first hand of Adam Koller, who walked it this morning.
