Western Challenge Update - Smells like Buffalo

Today Iceboaters from Minnesota will be walking, and hopefully sailing on at least two lakes. I look forward to reporting that Lake Christina is in most excellent condition later today. I expect to hear similar reports from Swede Lake.

The weather outlook is favorable for the next two weeks, and we should start seeing other lakes kick over in the next couple days... I expect Buffalo will freeze on Monday or Tuesday, lagging Christina by a week. The lead up week to the Great Western is supposed to be quite cold with overnight lows in the single digits.

Where are we going to sail this mythical event? It just smells like Buffalo this morning... It's certainly not official, but it sure looks like it's lining up that way.

ear to the ice..the quavering rumble of far-away, thundering DNs

"What is it?" suddenly whispered Rude.

The plainsman lay in strained posture, his ear against the ground.

"Hide the wagon and horses in the clump of cottonwoods," he ordered, tersely. Springing to his feet, he ran to the top of the knoll above the hollow, where he again placed his ear to the ground.

Jones's practiced ear had detected the quavering rumble of far-away, thundering hoofs. He searched the wide waste of plain with his powerful glass. To the southwest, miles distant, a cloud of dust mushroomed skyward. "Not buffalo," he muttered, "maybe wild horses." He watched and waited. The yellow cloud rolled forward, enlarging, spreading out, and drove before it a darkly indistinct, moving mass. As soon as he had one good look at this he ran back to his comrades.

"Stampede! Wild horses! Indians! Look to your rifles and hide!"

an excerpt from Zane Grey's The Last of the Plainsmen.

I hear The Buffalo coming...

Having Buffalo Lake freeze as expected on Monday was a delight...

We're sure paying attention to its conditions.
