It's been two busy weeks in the basement.
I've replaced the rusty nuts and bolts on
the "B.I." boom with stainless steel, cleaned
my stainless blocks, made assembly
stands for installing runners on the ice,
repaired the sail (last week), made a new
braided sheet line (still not sure there).
Aluminum (w/insert) runners are cleaned
and sharpened, may get painted later...

Waiting for Ice
Northern Indiana Ice is taking it's sweet time.
There was "seed ice" on Syracuse Lake today.
Temp's are hanging near the freezing point,
but Christmas is coming too.
I generated a map to Buffalo, MN,
but can't justify that distance/expense
at this time. Looking forward to pictures
and news of the event, and hope all goes well.
I put together a tool kit with a couple of
spare nuts, bolts, washers, etc. and am
thinking about a new seat for the Skimmer
while the ice comes and goes. 2-3 more weeks?
Lake Wawasee was fun touring last year...
Indiana Ice is a Tease
December 30th and still no sailable ice here.
Syracuse Lake had 1/2" Friday morning, perfectly smooth.
Shock waves could be sent across ice with gentle prodding.
Saturday morning ice was over 1", no more shock waves,
spider cracked when stepped/stomped. Right shoe got wet.
Sunday warmed up, Monday warmed up - ice gone.
Wish I was closer to MN or MI...
Which was Icier?
Lake Wawasee was the touring spot of choice today, after sailing the Lockley a week ago Friday, then again on Tuesday PM. The ten minute setup time makes Lockley sailing possible when I just need a little ice time, but don't have two or three hours to spare.
Saturday, January 10th was a trip northeast to Sand Lake, MI, to watch the Toledo Group race, then took a run Sunday on Syracuse Lake for approx. three hours. Oh what fun!
Which brings us back to today. "Wintery Mix Weather" isn't all that great for sailing when the mix includes a lot of sleet. Painful on the exposed areas, and makes it really hard to see when the ice builds up on your glasses. Ice scraper anyone? My sail is hanging in the stairway drying, as it became a semi-solid, (as did my snowmobile suit) covered with ice, with the rest of my DN, iced/glazed like a donut.
Rick and Rick Jr. Lemberg came out to tell me about a couple of thin spots on the west side of Wawasee after I'd sailed the whole main lake. Oops... It wasn't slowing up the fifty or more "fisherpeople" any. A Yugo with two fellows of questionable intelligence came down the boat ramp and onto the ice as I was taking a warmup break. They didn't venture far before turning tail and going back up the ramp and vanishing. Sleet turned to snow, coating the lake in white and hiding the formerly visible flaws, so it was time to retire for the day.
Happy Sailing!
