ICE

Bearded Jon Mattson, seen background left, representing IceBoating at the Button Reveal Contest at the St. Paul Winter Carnival, and missing the Great Western Challenge Regatta in order to do so.

He was out ripping on Lake Calhoun, in Uptown Minneapolis all afternoon hooting and hollering, flying a runner most any time he wanted to.

Ice Racing comes to the St Paul Winter Carnival

5366 was kiting most of the afternoon and confirms it's most excellent, a little soft, you'll like angles if you have them, but 100 degree inserts may serve well.

I thought about a night sail under the Minneapolis skyline tonight, then thought better, and may again reconsider... the only hold-back, I'm hoping for a full moon the first time I do that sail.

Forecast: NNE 14 km/h / 9mph , 11 degrees, 52F (I'm converting to metric).

For sure I'll be set up there tomorrow early, 0800? The south east parking lot is almost dry feet access, I didn't check the ramp condition, cause parking sucks up there, and the portage is short. The Great Clips Racing 38 boat will be available for intro sailing opportunities.

Yup, it was pretty good out there.

I saw no drain holes and the lake is dry. I kited the entire lake today past dark. 25% black right now with about 1/2" of hard slush on the rest with hard black underneath. The east shore is walk-on and the lake is dry.

JM's DN was powered up (runners flying) in the 10-12 mph wind on slush runners. Boats will be rigging in the AM.

ya had to have been there....

Took the boat down in twilight, I donno how many miles were logged today, top GPS speed was 44 mph on an unranked boat/w unranked sailor he was going good, but there were of faster boats out there too.

One of Minnesota's top High School Sailors, and most promisng DN racer, Maddy Kennedy, out ripping today working the boat well, is probably is on the 10 o'clock news tonite... WCCO... check it out, somebody tape it.

The ice is getting better!
