Great Ice in Thunder Bay

All the little bays are frozen over here in Thunder Bay.Just sailed today on 8" of smooth black ice with 1/2" snow cover at Bearch Beach,on Lake Superior (20 min out of town) the next Bay over Crystal Beach has about 3" of Smooth Black ice with zero snow.Forcast looking good into the middle of next week, mild and no snow.Come on up and treat yourself to some big Lake sailing.

Just finished haveing one of the most excellerating days sailing in my life.15-20 knts of steady south winds ,about a 2 mile course, nice smooth ice with zero hazards.I was going almost dead down wind sheeted in hard with one runner just skimming the surface for over 2 miles. These are awesome sailing machines. Can not wait for tommorow, more of the same wind predicted.

Funny thing happened when I

Funny thing happened when I arrived at the sailing site today ,the strong wind from yesterday kept up all night and broke up the nice ice surface. The bay was litterally wide open.Only ice left was near the shore.I measured some of the ice chunks and they where 12" thick.Might be good news as there is snow forcasted for tommorrow and then a cold spell after that.

Maybe not ...

... so funny if you'd been out sailing when the sheet broke free. :-(

Let's be careful out there!

This was actually an onshore

This was actually an onshore breeze.Being that Bearch Beach is at the end of the Bay the big wind combined for some big waves. We where sailing pretty close to shore and you could see at the end of the day the waves where eating up some ice 2-3 miles off shore. It was not just like the ice blew out,it just was progressively getting broken up from off shore in. When we packed up sailing there was still ice 2 miles out on the Bay.But at the end of the day the wind was really starting to howl from off shore.Apperently it blew hard all night and progresively the ice kept shrinking. There is still 10" thick ice 200 yds out from the shore but the waves are working on it.
