The Minnesota Ice Sailing Association is pleased to announce the Western Challenge Regatta is ON for this weekend, scrub racing Friday December 2 and racing Dec. 3 & 4!!!
A highly competitive international field is expected to compete for this prestigious first ice regatta of the season in North America.
The primary location for the event is Buffalo Lake, Buffalo, Minnesota. The lake is currently frozen, and beginning tomorrow, we expect to be making ice for the balance of the week.
As there remains uncertainty in the forecast in terms of snow fall, potentially heavy snowfall someplace in the region, several other potential venues within 2 hours of the primary location will continue to be monitored as the storm system currently impacting our region moves out of the area.
Full details, and final site selection will probably not be made until Tuesday Evening, 7:00 local time.
It's gonna be great!
all skill levels encouraged
And as always, all levels of experience are encouraged to participate.
notes on the storm
One of the key drivers in making this call, in addition to having numerous options (currently) is this prediction from the National Weather Service, in the current Winter Storm Warning.
"...SNOW ACCUMULATIONS MAY VARY GREATLY OVER A SHORT DISTANCE. THE AVERAGE SNOW AMOUNTS WILL RANGE FROM A TRACE UP TO 4 INCHES."
Strictly doing the numbers, 6 locations more than 50 miles apart and probability of losing a location due to snowfall... There's greater than an 80% probability that at least one of these current locations will be more than acceptable. Given the forecast cold temps, there's an 80%+ probability a suitable new venue will also emerge.
It's gonna be great!
