For you tech heads out there...this is how the Canadians are monitoring and mapping lake ice with radar satellites.
http://www.nrcan.gc.ca/earth-sciences/geography-boundary/remote-sensing/...
They can tell the state and condition.
Since the Canadian own a couple commercial radar satellites (and the USA doesn't have any), they can easily provide this service like weather reports. NOAA could and should be doing this as a service considering the number of people who drown each year for going out on unsafe ice.
scrub racing at noon, putting on at nortons restaurant. almost clear ice with wind sat but decreasing in afternoon. so want to be sailing by 10 am for best wind. less wind on sun. see their web site. meyer

Think Ice!
I sailed about 75 miles today (2-12-2012) w/ a top speed of 45.9 mph. Not to bad for sailing in 5-9 mph winds today. The ice is rough, the drifts aren't so bad to get through. definately not regatta ice, but it's sailable and a lot of fun.
Three boats sailed Cedar lake last Thurs. a little clattery but very little snow on ice. public launch off Hwy 13 at St Patrick. Cedar is about 10Mi south of Prior..
Here are the results.

Here is an interesting Blog about the event.
I am comint to Minneapolis this weekend and plan to drag my boat along. Where is a good site to set up and sail where my family could also play on the ice, but prehaps have a warm place to hang out too? Bar/restaurant? Thanks so much.

We have just wrapped 3 days of iceboat filming on Minnetonka. A very special thank you to Angie Ostbye, John Dennis, Harry Allen (& the rest of the Allen family), Mark Kiefer and Mike Maloney. They filmed DN's blasting around the windward mark, got the correspondent out in a variety of boats including the A Stern steer, and also recorded a handful of interviews. I will post when I know what day this will be airing.
Today went well and we got some great material. If it is nice tomorrow it would be good to get some more film in. Come on out! Should be much warmer than today.
If you're near a TV Saturday morning, check out a story WCCO is airing sometime between 8:00-9:00 AM
Cameraman & reporter both go for rides on White Bear Lake.
Looks like we racing again this weekend on Bald Eagle Lake. Since the "Nationals" got cancelled, the Commadore is calling it the Nite "Internationals". The ice is in top shape. Always a great time, and newbies are always welcome. The variety of the fleet makes for some interesting racing. Come on out!!
