I just finished another boat and thought I'd share a couple of hints with inexperienced builders. I use West epoxy although there are other good ones out there. One of the first things I found out about epoxy is that it's a bear to sand. I have never found anything that plugs up sand paper faster then epoxy. I found an easy solution to this problem, use wet dry sandpaper, wet. You can use a piece of paper till it wears out. I coat most all of the interior surfaces with epoxy. To make the epoxy flow better and to save weight, I cut the mixed epoxy about 25% with acetone (make sure you wear a respirator when you do this).
The FREE regatta scheduled for Feb 17th and 18th 2007 has been opened up to include all iceboats. There has been such great interest from other sailors. That now it is not only for Jboats. Free racing and trophies for all classes 1st-3rd place. There will be J boat racing and then sportsman class racing also. There will also be door prizes, drawings, goody bags and food!!
We will be grilling on the ice, food will be free or by donation. This will be a fun get together. With no cost for anything.
So far more than 40 boats confirmed as coming. Some A, B and C skeeters, sprinters, Jboats and stern steerers. The DN worlds and N/A’s are scheduled to start the same weekend in the same region. So some of the people who are coming are traveling with their DN buddies. (Some of our Dn'er friends may attend also if they are close enough. DN racing starts the 18th our Regatta starts the 17th)
Does anyone have any experience with running some camber in the steering runner/chock combination?
Looks like NOAA upgraded this useful tool:

Already a foot in central North Dakota.
Does anyone have some chocks for a DN for sale?

I've been sanding and refinishing the boat, it's gonna be ready for the 1st freeze this year. Anxious to try out the new carbon mast that I got last year, and get more involved in some racing, and more beer can races here on Tonka. All I need is some great runners and maybe I can play withthe big kids for at least one lap.
It looks there are a bunch of other folks interested in getting into DN sailing, Anyone know of some good DN's for sale. They would go quick if you post them I bet.
Tom V. is considering bringing his Kattack program to Lake Christina for the western regionals. That would be really great if he could do that for us.

Dear friends,
if someone thinks, its a long way for us Europeans to come to this event its just not true. For meeting you guys at this first weekend Iceboating in Minnesota we would even travel twice around the globe. We usually race more, than at any world championship and also everyone is much more relaxed. I asked JD, how much the starting fee is, the answer was "to come". I destroyed my hull after I spunn out. Before I turned around Mark Kiefer carried it from the Ice and took it to his shop. Next morning my boat was stronger than ever(Thank you Mark, JD and Ron for top maintenance at bar time).
This just in...and it's big.
Rumblings are we're going to be seeing KA sail numbers on the ice this year...Australian Iceboaters, racing DN's
Several Aussies will be making their winter, er, summer homes in Minnesota and campaigning DN's this winter... forming their Association, ramping up the programs.
Leaving the only continent not fielding DN Fleets to be the only fully frozen continent... Antarctica.
Planet Iceboat... expect to see the Racing Debut of KA sails at the Western Challenge Regatta, which will make it, the event event again Epic by definition, 50+ boats from 3 continents...

I grew up in Wisconsin and Minnesota. I now live in Alabama.
Does anyone teach this skill?
Does anyone lease an ice-boat after some instruction?
Appreciate any ideas.
Michael

I heard a rumor that the GC would be around Feb. 17, 2007.
Any truth to it?
Nothing on idniyra.org yet, and the DN BBS seems to be spammed into a stupor (i.e. it won't accept any more posts).
Cheers,
Geoff S.
We built a model of the new JT24 we are building. Pictures documenting the building will be posted on the J14 iceboating site and our iceboating blog throughout the summer.

We may also have a J14 regatta in 2007, most of the J14 skippers show alot of interest in getting together, so if you want to see a J14 come on out. We may have a spare J14 for experienced sailors to try out. The regatta will be free of charge. No charge for racing or participating in anyway. There will be trophies. Mike Acebo of the Orient Club has agreed to help with the racing since we will be busy pleasure sailing. We will decide on a tenative date soon
