Repairing 5156 - Day 9

Well, one snafu is over a week of work ain't bad...

When I was attaching the plank plates to the hull, one of the epoxy-filled holes stripped out. I've never had that happen before. The other plate went on with no problems.

Repairing 5156 - Day 8

Well, it's almost done!

I made lots of chips and sawdust between using the router to trim the deck plywood and the sander to level out the joints where the new deck fairs into the old.

Repairing 5156 - Day 7

This evening was a pretty straightforward set of tasks. The "must do" item was to glue deck plywood (3mm Okume) to the top of the sideboard and grab-rail. I also did some sanding to fair the glass patches into the surrounding areas.

Repairing 5156 - Day 6 (PM)

This evening was a quick stop in the shop again. I started by sanding the really rough edges off the various patches (just so I wouldn't cut myself on the sharp edges). Then I laid out the fiberglass to bond to the outside of the sideboard.

Repairing 5156 - Day 6 (AM)

In order to keep on schedule to have the hull ready to sail next weekend, I needed to get two areas of fiberglass glued on today. Since they are on perpendicular surfaces (the bottom and side), I couldn't do them in one session. So on my way into work this morning I stopped by the Boatwerks

Repairing 5156 - Day 5

Previous entries: Day-1, Day-2, Day-3, Day-4.

Today was something of a milestone. For the first time since the crash (two weeks ago, almost to the hour) there aren't any major "extra" pieces waiting to be glued back in place!

Repairing 5156 - Day 4

Previous entries: Day-1, Day-2, Day-3.

Today I glued up the final sideboard crack. However, while inspecting the glue-joint on the underside of the grab-rails, I noticed a crack in the epoxy across the bottom skin right at the forward mast-step bulkhead:

Repairing 5156 - Day 3

Previous entries: Day-1, Day-2.

The first step today was removing the clamps and masking tape from the "big crack" repair. A bit of work with the in-line sander followed by a few passes with the DA cleaned up the excess epoxy nicely. The joint looks good, and the sideboard is back mostly in one piece!

Repairing 5156 - Day 2

Day-1 of the project is described here, and the next installment is here.

Work kept me out of the shop Monday and Tuesday this week, and the 4-Lakes ice-boat club meeting kept me away on Wednesday. Finally on Thursday I was able to get working on the "big crack"...

The first step was to mask off everything but the wide areas of the main crack. The other splits and areas will be vacuum infused with glue later.

where's the ice

Rennovated a dn this summer waited for ice to form on ottertail lake and got snowed out. So this weekend Feb.21,22 I have loaded the boat and would like to know where fair to good ice is around Hudson WI. I did read the post about south of the 94 bridge so that"s one option. Is fire on ice still open? I'm from Mi and don't yet know the "locations" Thank you to all who help and if there is wind I'll be there, with my retro boat. dennis

Repairing 5156 - Day 1

The next installment of the story is here.

I had a fairly serious collision in the first Silver-fleet race of the GC. Luckily, everybody walked away, but the boats weren't so lucky. Mine got away "lightly", with some major splits in the port side, a hole a bit forward, and a bent chock.  A quick look at the damage at Richard Wollam's shop that night showed there was too much to repair before the end of the regatta, so I accepted Richard and Julie's offer to use their spare hull for the rest of the regattas (Thanks again!).

We're done!

The regatta was finished this morning when we got out on the ice and it was a whiteout.. nice coating of snow all over so you couldn't see the hazard, not that that matter, because there wasn't any wind either..

So we are heading home and I guess that there might be some good local ice!!

done.

NA's Day 1 of racing

Today the fleet got out on the ice early and in light winds got in 5 gold & 5 silver races. Yesterday racing was called off because of the ice conditions/wind speed..

This morning, (Wednesday) we left Traverse City at around 8:30 to go see if we were just going to pick up our boats off the ice, or if it was going to be a rescue mission. Everyone else had already taken their boat off the ice.
