Northwest Ice Yacht Association Regatta
postponed until: January 23, 24, 25, 2004
All races will be sailed under rules of the National Ice Boat Authority and those of the Northwest Ice Yachting Association. Regatta is re-scheduled to be held Friday, Saturday and Sunday, January 23,24, & 25, 2004.
The Regatta site order will be: Toledo, Ohio, Gull Lake, Michigan, Sturgeon Bay-Green Bay, Oshkosh, Menominee, Green Lake, Lake Geneva, Madison, Fond Du Lac, Pewaukee, Detroit & Burlington Bay, Hamilton.
N.I.Y.A. races will be held for Class A, B, C, D, E, Renegade and DN (NOTE: Class A races will be held separately at Wisconsin or Upper Michigan, if not held in that area).
The DN Western Regional Championships' Silver Fleet (the Real Racing) started off in big breeze with Minnesota's Jim McDonagh jumping out to a huge lead early in the first race, only to be overtaken later in the race, finishing a close second.
In the biting, well beyond brisk breeze, after the conclusion of the Gold Fleet's racing, Silver Fleet race Seven started with most of the gold fleet watching as they took their boats down, the scorers on the ice, and maybe spectators, missing the among the best racing of the entire regatta.
Jim sailed one "heck of a race" in the final race. In a tight fleet with four individual race winners, trailing the leading pack of 4-5 boats at the first downwind mark... substantially... maybe 300-400 yards... To just eek out a victory in the last 2 boatlengths of the race for a Win in Race Seven and consequently the regatta, on a tie breaker.

Throw-out |
On sunday the ice was great. Very flat and smooth, with plenty of bite. The wind had moderated a bit, so it was super fast, but not so out of control as saturday.
We got in three races for the gold, and four for the silver, so both fleets got in the full seven races.
I'll try to get the race results so I can post the final results. I can say that sunday did mixup the standings from saturday.
Poygan Lake is a great host for the 2004 Western Regionals.
The Gold fleet raced four races today, and the Silver fleet got in three.
The weather report on friday was calling for saturday to be 20-30mph winds with gusts up to 40. In the morning while setting up it seemed like the weather man was going to be right. The wind started off fresh and cold, and it was clocking around, so by the time the wind had settled in and the course was setup the wind was probably more like 15-23mph. The first race got off about 12:30-1:00. After that we quickly got through seven races, four gold, three silver.
This is a loose trascription from Couch's IDNIYRA Western Region Hotline Regatta Announcement, it is by no means official:
After two days of searching for suitable ice, having lost excellent pieces on Green Bay and access to excellent ice on Northern Lake Winnebago they are pleased to announce an Outstanding Piece of ice is located at Poygan Lake, near Oshkosh Wi. The same site as last year's Western Regional Championship Regatta... The Ice is characterized as a 9.9 with no apparent open water. The Western Rear Commodore recomments the longest, fastest runners in your arsenal to compete.

We are looking at two outstanding pieces of ice. One is the Northeast corner of Lake Winnebago launching just West of "High Cliff State Park" and the other East of the Fox River on Green Bay near the University. Both have been sailed and are large and quite good. Tomorrow they will be sailed again and evaluated. Just a note, Green bay is only 1/2 an hour farther than upper Winnebago going north through Milwaukee. Stay posted. Hotline is 414-299-9305

This should be a hoot!
Has anyone looked at the ice on Lake Pepin lately? I am hoping to sail Sunday, weather, snow and wind permitting.
Two of us went out for a great ride on monday afternoon. We went all the way from excelsior to wayzata and then over the pressure ridge, which you could barely see because of the snow, and did a loop on the main lake. It was really surreal, with the rose colored goggles, sun setting, perfect ice with a light covering of fresh snow and the half moon in the sky. We had about 8-12kts of breeze. It was also nice because there wasn't anybody else out on the lake. a great day.
The lake looks fast with the snow melted and nice winds on Sunday. I did not see any action Saturday. Has the ice weakened? Is anybody going out Sunday before the Vikings? If so let me know where.

Mice ate my sail. Looking for something used that doesn't have mouse doodoo, holes, or the bubonic plauge on it. This is for cruising, not racing.
Also might want a used mast for cruising.
Twin Cities area.
Dallas - 952-931-9108 - dallas@dallasjohnson.net
Need to upgrade from my aluminum mast. Any one with a spare mast in Twin Cities area, either email me at miller.m@mchsi.com or phone 952-471-3062. Need before the Western Regional. Prefer the latest model.
